Brussels To Make Smoke Detectors Mandatory From 2025

Smoke detectors are mandatory in all homes in the Brussels-Capital Region from January 2025. The new regulation specifies where smoke detectors should be installed in homes, installation requirements, when central detection systems must be installed, and the obligations of tenants and landlords regarding the installation of smoke detectors.

Brussels Smoke Alarm Requirements

Alarms must:

Built-in battery with a service life of up to ten years
Comply with the "EN 14604" standard
It is an "optical" smoke alarm. "Ionization" alarms are prohibited
If the smoke alarm is connected to a 230V circuit, it must be equipped with a backup battery to ensure normal operation in the event of a power outage
Non-interconnected devices are allowed if the number of alarms required is less than 4
For 4 or more devices, the smoke alarm must be interconnected or form part of a centralized detection system
Owners who already have 4 or more non-interconnected smoke detectors must comply with the new regulations before January 1, 2028
